The 3C's of Placing Pavers on Hardscape projects...

Recently I was talking with Tony Do, Bartell Global's regional sales manager for most of the western US about the complexity of producing a correctly placed, long-lasting walkable surface in the hardscape industry. He made a good point that simplifies our view of  the process, he made this statement…

"Placing pavers involves a wealth of knowledge, but its essence can be distilled into three main categories, known as the 3 C's."

  • Compaction
  • Cutting
  • consolidation

When it comes to creating beautiful and durable hardscapes, proper installation of pavers is key. Ensuring that your pavers are placed correctly not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space but also ensures the longevity of your surface, whether it is pavers, stone, porcelain or any other surface. Among the various crucial steps involved in the installation process, these three stand out as particularly essential to know and understand.

Let’s consider their importance one at a time…

  1. Compaction:

Compaction is the first "C" and arguably the most critical step in the paver installation process. Proper compaction ensures that the base material, whether it's aggregate, sand, or gravel, is densely packed, providing a stable foundation for the pavers. Insufficient compaction can lead to settling, shifting, and uneven surfaces over time.

To achieve proper compaction, use a plate compactor or a similar tool designed for the job. Start by compacting the base material in layers, adding and compacting each layer until you reach the desired thickness. Pay special attention to the edges and corners, as these areas are prone to insufficient compaction.

  1. Cutting:

The second "C," cutting, is essential for achieving a clean and professional-looking installation, especially when dealing with irregular spaces or edges. Pavers often need to be cut to fit around obstacles, create curves, or meet specific design requirements.

For cutting pavers, you can use a variety of tools, including a hammer and chisel, a paver splitter, a wet saw, or even a state of the art, dry saw like the one shown here. these saws are awesome because they cut materials with NO WATER and NO DUST! The choice of tool depends on the type of paver material and the complexity of the cuts required. Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and goggles, when cutting pavers.

3. Consolidation:

The third "C," consolidation, refers to the final step of ensuring that the pavers are securely set in place. After the pavers are laid, joint fillers like Polymeric sand are applied to lock them into position and promote interlock between the pavers.

Consolidation can be achieved by using a plate compactor, and protecting the surface with mats, plywood, old carpet.  On small areas, a rubber mallet, depending on the size and layout of the pavers. Run the compactor over the surface of the pavers in multiple directions to ensure even consolidation.

More recently, a important step forward has been made that replaces a plate-compactor when consolidating joint sand, that is the paver roller, like the one shown here has either 4 or 5 Polyurethane rollers that gently consolidate joint materials with little to no damage to the surface of the pavers. Pay particular attention to the edges and corners to ensure that all pavers are securely locked in place.

In conclusion, the 3 "C" of placing pavers in hardscape—Compaction, Cutting, and Consolidation—are crucial steps that should not be overlooked. By concentrating on the 3 "C"s, you can ensure a long-lasting, visually appealing, and structurally sound walkable surface that will enhance the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space projects for years to come.
